Global wine consumption fell marginally in 2013 and the US outstripped France as the top consumer, according to the International Organization of Wine and Vine (OIV). France was in second place at 28 million hectolitres, followed by Germany, Italy and China. Made in Italy wine is increasingly popular abroad, but because of the crisis Italians drink less. Data from the Organization of Wine and Vine (OIV) speak for themselves. Italy is world’s largest producer of wine in 2013, but consumption falls within national borders.
The Made in Italy wine, paradoxically, is the most consumed abroad.
The United States became the world’s biggest market for wine last year, beating France into second place for the first time as consumption slides in the country long seen as its natural home and Americans develop a greater taste for it.
France, the world’s third largest wine producer behind Italy and Spain, saw its consumption per capita fall more than 20 percent between 2002 and 2011 to 46.4 litres per year.
